How Heavy Your BACKPACK is ?

Imagine you are going on a long journey and you are going to be away for a long time. What will you carry with you as luggage?

In the movie, ‘In the Air’, "George Clooney's" character uses the backpack as a metaphor to explain life. I am going to borrow that idea as well.

Our life is one big journey. Every milestone we cross, every decision we take, every person we meet, adds to the weight of the baggage we carry. We hoard memories, which often force us to hold on to objects that have no place in our lives. These are the straps eating into your shoulders. Our experiences act as buckles that lock us in place and prevent us from looking at things differently. These are our limiting beliefs. We accept the outcomes of the past and ignore the lessons. We stop fighting.

Sometimes, we have the good fortune of having wheels on our luggage. They greatly help in taking off the weight of the load and do assist in a smoother passage. Very similar to the companions we choose to live our lives with. If they are supportive and compatible, then the wheels stay on. But if there is friction, the wheels get stuck in the grooves of regret and wobble for a while before finally falling off.

Once again the baggage goes back on our shoulders! Of course, we all need to pack stuff for our journey. The trick is knowing what to pack and what to leave behind. Very often, our backpack contains our past that weighs us down. We take on responsibilities that don’t belong to us. Sometimes, we need to get a bigger bag to accommodate all the extras. Make sure you pack those things you will not get anywhere, your family and friends, goodwill and respect of others. Leave the people who demotivate or do not help you grow. Ignore the emotions that belittle your ideals and principles.

Next pack the essentials that are priceless, your integrity and respect for others. In times of trouble, these values are what will drive you to success. And finally, travel light. Keep a positive mindset and keep your wants to a minimum. Greed can be the reason many a great person stumbles. Don’t keep it too light, or you just may find yourself depending on others for your wants and needs. Conditionally!

It is just as important to pack your backpack in the right order. Use all the compartments appropriately. Things of everyday use should be easily accessible. If you have to dig deep to satisfy a need, you just may find yourself getting lazy and leave it there. Emotions are those things. If not addressed, they fester. Air them out frequently. Re-arrange your backpack.

Make sure you are able to carry your own bag. Depending on others, to share your load, slows you down and many times, you might need to take diversions or make unnecessary pit stops.
